Summer Update
Greetings,
I guess it's time to write. It's been a busy week. After a long stretch of nothing, suddenly I'm occupied. Saturday night I drove down to Hollywood to see The Donnas play at Safari Sam's on sunset. Rockin' show. Unfortunately, I ending up eating 3 tickets. I couldn't find a single person who wanted to go with me. Well Slackers, you missed out, it was awesome.
I was up at 9am the next morning to report for 24 Hour Theater. This was the sixth installment at the Hunger artist Theater, my 4th. The last three I wrote for, but they changed it this time. First time writers only. Bummer. So, I decided to act. I was asked to direct, but it didn't happen. i ended up in a piece called "A girl called Spooky", written by Garrett McDonald. And Spooky it was. Creepy, is more the word for it. The scene was directed by Susan Marx and also starred Peter Miller and Lisa Meyers. I enjoyed working with everybody, but Lisa was a revelation. She was so perfect for the part (Not to call her spooky or anything...). She and I ended up spending most of the day together (She didn't bring her car). Our piece required flashlights and orange vests. Also, she needed something blue to wear. So after reading through the play a few times at Starbucks, Lisa & I headed to BigLots to find props. No success there, so we went next door to Goodwill. I didn't find what I needed, but Lisa found a ridiculous blue wet suit. She immediately decided that it was Spooky's costume. It was like she found the Holy Grail. She was bouncing off the walls. I should paint the picture: She's about 5 foot nothing, and 90 pounds. We were quite the pair.
For the Orange Vests, we went to Home Depot. SUCCESS! And, the flashlights were right next to them. I bought myself a 4 cell Maglight (mine broke years ago; I've been looking for an excuse to replace it).
The show was at 10pm and we went last, so we didn't go on until 11 or 11:30. The house was pretty disappointing. Maybe a dozen people. Earlier installments were always SRO. I guess it didn't help running on a Sunday Night. I think we did a pretty damned good job with it.
It was fun meeting a bunch of new actors, hanging out with Claire and Robert, running around with Lisa, and all the other wackiness. Still...
I'd rather write next time...
Addendum: I ended up leaving my phone in the dressing room and not noticing until the next day. I didn't get it back until late last night. I had 11 voice mails by then. I'm never this popular. Because of it, I didn't work on Grease for my friend Christina. I feel bad, but the money issue was never straightened out anyway (Another story for another time). I also missed two groups of friends going to see Transformers. I have e-mail, people!
Today is the 4th of July. I'm headed to my friend Brett's house. I haven't hung out with him since last 4th of July.
I picked up a new pair of shorts today. It's summer now and I only had one pair. That's just not right.
Let see, what else? Rehearsals for "Earthlings Beware!" at Costa Mesa Civic Playhouse start on Monday and I've barely cracked open the script. We open August 3rd. Yipes....
